For the last few years, this site has been running in Wordpress on Namecheap. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked and didn’t require any maintenance. Recently a Namecheap outage broke the site which was enough motiviation to move.

6 years ago, in the early days of the pandemic I had some time on my hands so decided to finally improve the setup and check out some static site generators. After playing with a few I settled on Hugo, exported the posts from Wordpress and created a Github repo.

Then I realised that some things like comments weren’t so trivial with a static site, and around that time I started working with an exchange so life got busy again and the repo sat idle.

Fast forward a few years and with AI interns at my beck and call, there are zero excuse to put off these kinds of simple yet time consuming tasks. I’d even created a few microsites for friends and family running completely for free using static sites hosted in Github, published using a free CloudFlare account, Umami for analytics, Buttondown for a newsletter and Tally.so for the contact form. The sites are blazingly fast and super easy to deploy with Cloudflare and Github doing all the heavy lifting, so why not pull myself into the modern era?

It’s worth noting that whilst I use LLMs all day every day, the content of this site will continue to be written by me as it always has been. I enjoy writing and don’t always enjoy the cadence and style the LLMs produce, unless it’s for writing something really boring like renewing health insurance.

So here we are, all modern and snappy. Next I need to figure out what to do with the 13 years’ worth of drafts sitting incomplete…
